The Importance of Surface Preparation

Proper surface preparation is the foundation of any successful coating or finishing project. Poor prep leads to premature coating failure, adhesion issues, and costly rework.

Adhesion is Everything

Coatings bond mechanically to the surface profile created by blasting. Without proper prep, even the best coating systems will fail prematurely.

Contamination Removal

Oils, rust, mill scale, and other contaminants prevent proper coating adhesion. Blasting removes these contaminants at a microscopic level that cleaning alone cannot achieve.

Consistent Profile

Different coatings require specific surface profiles. Cabinet blasting provides controlled, repeatable profiles matched to your coating specification.

Why Cabinet Blasting?

Controlled Environment: Cabinet blasting provides consistent media delivery, uniform coverage, and repeatable results that field blasting cannot match.

Immediate Cleanliness: Parts are blasted and immediately protected from flash rust and contamination in a controlled environment.

Quality Documentation: Every job includes QC photos showing the achieved surface profile and cleanliness before coating application.

Right Media for the Job: Media type and size matched to substrate and coating system.

Common Surface Prep Standards

SSPC/NACE Standards

Industry standards for surface cleanliness (SP-5 White Metal, SP-10 Near-White, SP-6 Commercial) that support coating performance.

Profile Depth

Measured in mils, profile depth must match coating thickness specifications. Too smooth equals poor adhesion, too rough equals coating defects.

"Preston did a terrific job sandblasting my valve covers so I could repaint them. His quote was very reasonable and even though the job took a lot more work than I think he expected, he stood by his original price. Very fast turnaround too. I would highly recommend his service and I will likely go to him again."
